Class Description

A History of Africa from Prehistory to the Atlantic Slave Trade This is the first in a three-course sequence on the history of Africa. This one will center around the six-episode PBS documentary produced by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Africa’s Great Civilizations, which we will view at home and discuss in class in weeks two through seven. In week one, I will use nine maps to provide an introduction to Africa as a continent. The eighth week will focus on the Atlantic slave trade. There will be a printed companion volume sold at cost as well as a different PDF companion volume with pictures of the art and architecture mentioned in the documentary. This class complements Marianne LoGerfo’s class, African Voices from the Nile to the Niger. Mondays, 9:15 – 10:30 INSTRUCTOR ZOOM Class Limit: 50
