An Exploration of Islamic Cultures
with Deepali Baumann
An Exploration of Islamic Cultures through Movies Islam is not a monolith. Join us in an exploration of diverse Islamic cultures through movies. Let’s get together to discuss what we learn about Tuaregs in Timbuktu, Zaza Kurds in the mountains of Turkey, Uighurs in Xinjiang, budding jihadists from the slums of Casablanca, Morocco to Charkhi, Pakistan, Bedouin families in Saudi Arabia and Israel, star-crossed lovers in the West Bank, everyday heroes and hypocrites in Tehran and Cairo, feminists across North Africa and the Middle East, the teen girl who escapes an honor killing in Turkey, the little boys at a madrasa in Bangladesh, mothers and daughters, and fathers and sons across the Muslim world. Will the movies simply be a window into other cultures or a mirror in which we see ourselves? Participants are asked to get free online memberships to Seattle Public Library, Sno-Isle Library and King County Library systems to access documentaries and movies through Kanopy Streaming Library. We may also tap Netflix and/or Amazon depending on the class members’ existing subscription services. ZOOM Mondays: 11:00am - 12:30pm Class Limit: 15
