Book Club: The Return of Faraz Ali
with Deepali Baumann
Book Club: The Return of Faraz Ali by Aamina Ahmad We will read and discuss The Return of Faraz Ali over four sessions. The inciting event is the murder of a girl in the “walled city,” the red-light district of Lahore. Our protagonist, Faraz Ali, is the lead investigator sent to the Mohalla by a father he barely knows. We quickly discover that Faraz was born to a courtesan and then taken away as a little boy and sent to grow up with his father’s poor relations in a small village. The book starts out as a whodunit, then turns into a multilayered, multigenerational saga that takes us from Lahore to Benghazi, to Dhaka and London, with the “walled city’”forever at the center. We’ll learn about the life of the Tawaif (Muslim courtesan), the casual entitlement and cruelty of the upper classes, and the birth of Bangladesh. Aamina Ahmad gives us no heroes, no caricatures defined by nationality or religion. She gives us only people playing the hand that life has dealt them, in a game that has been rigged for generations.
