High Points of German Romanticism

with Christiane Faris

Class Description

Romanticism was the dominant European movement around 1780-1850. German Romantics rejected the Rationalism of the Enlightenment in favor of feeling and sentiment, seeking irrational and often mysterious experiences while also praising nature and the simplicity of pre-industrial life. The Romantics strove to create a synthesis of all the arts. Opposition to Napoleon‘s French occupation nurtured the awakening of German Nationalism. The class will discuss characteristics of German Romantic fiction, including a dramatic reading of a Grimm fairy tale, poetry, music and painting. Purchase or library loan of a short novella, (Eichendorff, Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing) is recommended. In Person: B4 Wednesdays: 11:00am - 12:30pm Class Limit: 15
