Islam and the Origins of Islamic Fundamentalism, S2 This is a repeat of Session 1. This course begins with an overview of the beliefs and practices of Islam. In the third week we will watch a PBS video on the Islamic Golden Age and learn about the many contributions made by Muslims to the development of the modern world. In the fourth week we’ll see how the roots of Islamic Fundamentalism can be traced to European colonialism. In the fifth and sixth weeks we’ll see how this impacted Iran and Egypt, Shi’a and Sunni countries respectively. In the seventh week we’ll look at Muslim views of America as revealed in extensive research done by the Pew Research Center. The final week will address the issue of the compatibility of Islam and the West. I will provide a course packet that will be available for sale in the LLC parking lot on Friday, January 6th from 11:00–noon. It will cost around $15.
