New Voices: Book & Movie Club
with Deepali Baumann
Class Description
Flashlight is a literary novel that begins with a nighttime walk on a beach in Japan. The story opens with a staggering loss and follows the reverberations past and future, across generations and continents, exploring trauma, migration, and identity. Through a fragmented history spanning Japan, Korea, and the United States, Choi uses the metaphor of a “flashlight” to show how memory illuminates fragments of truth, exploring how families build stories from what they cannot really know. We may also watch related movies and documentaries, depending on class preferences. Mondays, 11:00 - 12:30 LLC ZOOM Class Limit: 12
