Flashlight is a literary novel that begins with a nighttime walk on a beach in Japan. The story opens with a staggering loss and follows the reverberations past and future, across generations and continents, exploring trauma, migration, and identity. Through a fragmented history spanning Japan, Korea, and the United States, Choi uses the metaphor of a “flashlight” to show how memory illuminates fragments of truth, exploring how families build stories from what they cannot really know.
