Opera, Ballet, Modern Dance & Its Music

Chuck Roxin

Class Description

An Appreciation of Opera, Ballet, Modern Dance and its Music The class will focus on what makes music and its theater compelling, and how complete works are built. From the Baroque to the contemporary, we’ll explore the operatic drama, the dance, and its music. We will be featuring a new opera by Michi Wiancko [Michi Wiancko]. She has made the music available to us without cost or royalty. It premiered at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. We will focus on a few works and look at them in detail to learn why they are considered ‘great.’ This will include Bernstein’s ballet Fancy Free, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Rameau’s The Gallant Indians, Puccini’s La Boheme, Stravinski’s Petrushka, and a few other works. The guest speaker for dance is Tara Stepenberg, Juilliard graduate and long time member of the staff of the Pacific Northwest Ballet. An internationally recognized movement analyst, she studied dance with such greats as Anthony Tudor, Jose Limon and Anna Sokolow. In addition, she studied with Thelma Biracree, a member of Martha Graham’s dance company. Tara has enjoyed a long career as a teacher, choreographer and performer.
