P. G. Wodehouse : Best Writer?

with Dale Chase

Class Description

P. G. Wodehouse : Best Writer of the 20th Century? On the face of it, this question is absurd. After all, the 20th century had a galaxy of fine writers: Joyce, Wolfe, Thurber, Waugh, Greene, Rushdie, Morrison, etc., etc. So, how could Wodehouse hold his head up in this crowd and why have so many of them called him “The Master?” When I started to think about this, I surveyed Amazon Books to see how many Wodehouse books are currently in print. I stopped when my count went well over 100. So, how is it that a comic writer whose early work goes back to near the beginning of the 20th century, still creates this level of interest and readership? Come join me in the delight of finding out. We will read and discuss at least one novel and a number of short stories and watch a few productions that have been made from “The Masters” oeuvre. What better summer reading is there than Jeeves and Wooster, Blandings Castle, Ukridge, the Mulliner clan, and their many companions in zaniness?
