Perspectives on the Hebrew Bible

with Ed Wagner

Class Description

Perspectives on the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament A few years ago, I was enthusiastically describing our family Passover Seder to a learned friend, who politely but firmly informed me that there was no evidence of a mass exodus from Egypt. Incredulous, I had to check this out, and thus began my fascination with the Bible and academic Bible scholarship. Over the past two centuries, biblical scholars in a variety of disciplines have reported provocative new evidence and hypotheses that address critical questions many of us have about the origin and meaning of biblical text, and the history of the ancient Israelites and their religion. Who authored the books? Did Joshua make the walls come tumbling down? Why are there three different Ten Commandments? Where did monotheism come from? Our focus will be the books (Genesis through 2 Kings) that track Israelite history from creation to the Babylonian exile. There will be a course book with notes and other materials, so our only textbook is the Hebrew Bible. In Person: Youth Room Tuesday: 9:00am - 10:30am Class Limit: 35
