Poetry of Emily Dickinson
with Michael Shurgot
Class Description
Emily Dickinson remains one of the most enigmatic of American poets. Her poems are undated, and so a sense of her “progress” as a poet is almost impossible to determine. Equally inscrutable is her biography, given how reclusive she was for most of her life. Her poetic subjects are quite varied, and even though we do not know the order of her compositions, we can approach her poems by studying several that are centered on (mostly) recognizable themes. Please be prepared to read her poems in class and to participate in discussions. Text: Any edition of Dickinson’s poems will suffice. Most of the poems are also available online. In Person: Room B2 Wednesday: 10:00 - 11:30 *No Class 10/2 Class Limit: 12
