Robert Graves and I Claudius
with Dale Chase
Class Description
I first encountered Robert Graves in 1961, when a selection of poems from his new book Poems about Love appeared in the The Atlantic Magazine. I quickly fell in love with Graves and ever since have assiduously read and collected every book of his I could get my hands on. In mid-twentieth century Robert Graves was a major figure in English and world literature. He was a major force in the re-emergence of the idea of a goddess in our culture, but has now slipped a bit from public consciousness. In this class we will become reacquainted with Graves by reading his most famous novel, I Claudius, and watching the excellent BBC series based on the novel. We will proceed by discussing the novel, the emperor Claudius, and what arises in translating a novel into film. Any edition of I Claudius will do. In Person, Room B2 Mondays, 12:00pm - 1:30pm Class Limit: 10
