Science Grab Bag
with Tom Gaskins
Science to some of us is a candy store and we feel like wide-eyed ten-year-olds. Everything we learn is another sweet gumdrop. Let’s enjoy a few. We’ll explore the puzzling and globally unique geography of Eastern Washington’s coulees, dry falls and misplaced boulders — the Channeled Scablands — and follow the fascinating mystery of their formation and how it was solved. We’ll learn how CRISPR technology gives us the power to modify genes and genomes, and the profound implications of that power. Our increasing understanding of nature often follows our advancing ability to see it. We’ll explore that history and survey our current ability to see the very small and the very far away. All Science Nobels recognize profound discoveries, but we’ll take a look at those so uniquely profound that they changed our lives. We’ll finish by having fun watching and discussing some wonderful and clever animations that explain nature in ways that make us understand and remember. Yum! Tom enjoys learning how things work, especially nature. He spent 35 years creating software to model and visualize the workings of nature and machines.
