Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles
with Bruce Bigley
Class Description
We will read and discuss Thomas Hardy's penultimate novel, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, in which Hardy confronts the injustice of Victorian sexual morality by portraying the fate of Tess, who has violated its norms. The reaction to Hardy's portrayal may have led to his abandonment of the novel form after his next novel and it certainly has inspired twentieth century novelists like Lawrence and John Fowles to dismantle the double standards which were the Victorian norm. Any unabridged version is fine for the class. ZOOM Thursdays: 10:30am - 12:00pm Class Limit: 20
