What is Religion?
with Richard Curtis
This class will examine and discuss Dr. Curtis’s first book, titled, What is Religion? On the Nature of the Human Mind and the Role of Religion (With or Without God). It is available from many online booksellers, and Dr. Curtis can provide electronic copies as well. The book argues that religion is a universal human phenomenon, regardless of content. In popular culture, religion is understood to be belief in supernatural things, but specialists in the field usually use a more generic definition. In the book, Dr. Curtis offers his theory of the nature of religion, which is open as to content (that is compatible with theistic and atheist positions), based on the latest insights from Philosophy of Mind, the Social Sciences and Cognitive Science.
