Class Description

Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ recently won the International Booker Prize. Set in 1938, when Taiwan was a colony of the Japanese Empire, the novel is, at its heart, an examination of whether a colonized Taiwanese person can form an equal relationship with a Japanese person. It also explores Taiwanese culture through its cuisine and involves an intense affection between the fictional Japanese author and her Taiwanese guide - feelings that can be interpreted as friendship, or romantic infatuation. A guest speaker will give us a crash course in Taiwanese history. We may also watch related movies and documentaries, depending on class preference.
